KGFW Sports – Huskers Advance, Baseball Sweeps, Loper Champs and High School Update

The No. 5 seeded Nebraska volleyball team swept the 12th-seeded Baylor Bears yesterday afternoon to advance to an NCAA Regional Final for the ninth straight year. The Huskers came from behind to win set one, 25-21. They never trailed in set two, winning 25-17, and then finished off the Bears in set three 25-19. With All-American Lauren Stivrins sidelined, fellow All-American Lexi Sun led the Huskers with a career-high five aces, five digs and a team leading 12 kills on .345 hitting. Callie Schwarzenbach, who filled in for Stivrins, had three kills on seven swings and totaled a match-high five blocks. Nicklin Hames had 31 assists, 11 digs, four kills, three blocks and one service ace. Kenzie Knuckles had a match-high 13 digs and serving specialist Hayley Densberger had a pair of aces. With the victory, the Huskers advance to this afternoon’s Regional Final, where they will be facing the tourney’s 4th seed Texas. The Longhorns defeated the 13th seed, Penn State, in four sets yesterday. Today’s Regional Final is set to begin at approximately 1:30 this afternoon.

The Nebraska baseball team completed the weekend sweep of Penn State with a 5-3 road win yesterday. The Huskers outscored the Nittany Lions 24-7 on the weekend in posting their first road conference sweep since 2019. The Big Ten leading Huskers are in East Lansing this weekend for a three game series against Michigan State.

The Nebraska softball team avoided being swept by 24th ranked Minnesota, with a 6-4 win in game four of the series yesterday. The Husker softball team will host Wisconsin in a four game series this weekend.

The Nebraska football team is adding another walk on quarterback, Spencer Arceneaux from Mobile, Alabama. According to 247Sports, the 6-foot-1, 180-pound Arceneaux is listed as a 3-star, pro-style QB. He was slated to walk-on at Kansas, committing to the the Jayhawks in late January. That changed after the dismissal of Les Miles. Nebraska announced a walk-on class of 20 players in early February. The Nebraska football team is holding their 10th practice of the spring this morning. The Spring Game is Saturday, May 1st, kickoff will be at 1:00.

The Nebraska men’s basketball team received a commitment from former 4-star prospect Saturday, Keon Edwards, who is transferring from DePaul. The 6-foot-7, 185-pound freshman wing was initially part of the 2021 recruiting class, but reclassified to the 2020 class, signed with DePaul in November, and joined the Blue Demons for the second part of the 2020-21 season. He is one of several DePaul players who opted to enter the NCAA transfer portal following the firing of then-head coach Dave Leitao.

The UNK volleyball team swept Central Oklahoma and downed Northwest Missouri State in five sets to win the MIAA Spring Tournament Saturday evening in Topeka, Kansas. Madison Squiers was named the Most Outstanding Player. Teammates Mary Katherine Wolfe and Anna Squiers were named to the All-Tournament Team. The Lopers finish the spring with a record of 16-3. With the NCAA canceling the Championships back in the fall, this spring didn’t officially count (player, coach and school records). In addition, there was no official MIAA regular season or tourney champion this spring.

Redshirt junior Baylie Bryant and redshirt sophomores Alex Goracke and Seth Simonson set new school records at the Loper Invitational Sunday evening at Kearney High School. Bryant broke a seven-year old mark in the pole vault, Goracke bested a 12-year old standard in the hammer with Simonson surpassing a 20-year old record at 800 meters. In all, UNK won 13 events on the day, was runner up 17 times and dominated several events. Next weekend finds the Lopers in Iowa (Drake Relays) and Kansas (Pitt State Tune Up).

The UNK softball team split yesterday’s double header with Northwest Missouri State at Dryden Park. The Lopers will host Northeastern State and Rogers State this weekend.

Des Moines swept their three game series with the Tri City Storm this past weekend at the Viaero Center. Still leading in the Western Conference standings, the Storm closes out the regular season this weekend with games against Sioux City and Omaha.
