KGFW Sports – NU Updates, Wins for UNK and HC Football and High School Post Season Info

By News Nov 2, 2020 | 6:48 AM

The Nebraska football team takes on Big Ten West Division Leader Northwestern this Saturday in Evanston, Illinois. The Wildcats improved to 2-0 on the season Saturday with a 21-20 win at Iowa. The Huskers and Wildcats will kickoff Saturday morning at 11:00.

In Husker recruiting news:

Jailen Weaver, a 6-foot-8 220-pound defensive end from California, announced his commitment to the Huskers this past weekend. A three star prospect, 247Sports Composite lists him as the 48th best weak-side defensive end in the nation. He choose Nebraska over his other two finalists Indiana and Tennessee. Weaver is commit No. 20 for Nebraska in the 2021 recruiting cycle, adding to a class that now ranks 20th nationally per the 247Sports Composite.

Chris Kolarevic, a 6-foot-1 230-pound inside linebacker from Northern Iowa, announced he’ll join the Huskers next semester as a graduate transfer with two years of eligibility.

The Huskers also added a pair of walk-ons to the 2021 class over the weekend. They received a verbal commitment from Creighton Prep defensive back AJ Collins, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound defensive back. 6-foot-3, 285-pound offensive lineman Weston Reiman from Weeping Water will also be walking on at Nebraska. They are the third and fourth known members of the Huskers’ 2021 walk-on class.

One other Husker football related note: Former Husker Tristan Gebbia has been named Oregon State’s starter at quarterback. The Beavers open their season with a home game against Washington State Saturday.

In Nebraska men’s basketball news:

The Huskers will host Georgia Tech in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Wednesday, Dec. 9th. This is the second straight year that the Huskers and Yellow Jackets have squared off. It’s also the Huskers’ first ACC/Big Ten Challenge home game since 2017. Nebraska is 5-4 all-time in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge since joining the Conference in 2011-12, and is one of just three Big Ten programs with a winning record.

The Nebraska and Kansas State men’s basketball programs have agreed to delay the start of the three-year non-conference series between the two programs that was scheduled to begin this December. The three-year series will now begin on December 19th, 2021, at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln with future contests set for T-Mobile Arena in Kansas City (Dec. 17th, 2022) and Manhattan (2023-24).

The UNK football team topped Pittsburg State, 31-26, Saturday afternoon in Kansas. The win snaps the Lopers 12-game, 37-year losing streak to the Gorillas. The Lopers last win over Pitt came back in 1983, 27-13. The UNK football team will host former RMAC rival Chadron State this Saturday, kickoff is at 3:00.

The Hastings College football team snapped a four game losing streak Saturday with a 34-7 win at the University of Jamestown. The Broncos final home game is this Saturday when they host Northwestern College, kickoff will be at 1:00. The Hastings College volleyball team was edged at Briar Cliff in five sets Saturday. The Lady Broncos host Concordia tomorrow night at 7:30.

The Tri-City Storm closed their preseason schedule with a 9-0 shutout win over Lincoln Saturday night at the Viaero Center. Finishing with a perfect 6-0 mark in “Corn Cup” play, the Storm opens the regular season this Friday with a road game against the Des Moines Buccaneers. The Storm’s home opener is Saturday, November 14th when they host the Lincoln Stars. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05pm.
