KGFW Sports – B1G Says No, Lopers vs. Pitt and High School Football and Volleyball Schedules

By News Oct 30, 2020 | 5:55 AM

The Big Ten on Thursday said no to a proposed deal that would have allowed the Nebraska football team to replace its canceled game Saturday against Wisconsin with a game against FCS foe Chattanooga. The Huskers’ game with the Badgers was canceled Wednesday after all Wisconsin team-related activities were paused because of an increased number of COVID-19 cases within the program. In trying to find a replacement at the last minute, Nebraska had put together a deal to face Chattanooga, which lost to Western Kentucky 13-10 last week. It was the Mocs’ only game this fall. The Southern Conference voted to play its season in the spring, and Chattanooga’s next scheduled game is Feb. 20th against VMI. Nebraska officials notified Chattanooga officials by phone Thursday morning that a Big Ten committee had not approved the game to be played. The Huskers are now off until Saturday, November 7th when they travel to Evanston, Illinois for 11:00AM matchup with the Northwestern Wildcats. The Huskers home opener will now be November 14th when they host the Penn State Nittany Lions.

The Tri-City Storm have acquired an 8th Round draft pick in this year’s USHL Phase II draft from the Sioux Falls Stampede in exchange for forward Sam Rhodes. Rhodes scored four goals and recorded six assists in thirty-two games with the Storm last season.

The UNK football team begins a four-game season at MIAA-rival Pittsburg State Saturday. UNK is one of just nine Division II schools playing this fall. Kickoff between the Lopers and Gorillas is set for 12:05 p.m. The Lopers will host former RMAC foe Chadron State Nov. 7th and MIAA member Missouri Western State Nov. 21st. The Lopers other road game is at RMAC member South Dakota Mines Nov. 14th in Rapid City.

The UNK cross country teams will compete today at the Newman Team Championships in Wichita. This meet is serving as a qualifying event for the D2 National Invitational in Texas next month. UNK is ranked 13th in the latest men’s national rankings, which this year is determined by a panel of head coaches from across the country. Other conferences have already held qualifying events for the D2 Invite; the field will be announced this weekend or early next.

The Hastings College football team is on the road tomorrow, traveling to North Dakota for a game against the University of Jamestown. Kickoff is at 1:00. The Hastings College volleyball team is on the road as well with a match against Briar Cliff in Sioux City, Iowa tomorrow at 5:00.
