KGFW Sports – Sodbusters Update, UNK Adds 2, Aucoin Honored and More

Scott Galusha, the Co-Owner and General Manager of the Hastings Sodbusters confirmed the team will be in action this summer. The Sodbusters season will begin June 26th and end on the 19th of August. Their schedule will be released in the coming days.

College baseball players are returning to the diamond tonight (Thr) for the first organized event since the start of the pandemic. Three Creighton players will be participating. Senior infielder Ryan Mantle, senior pitcher Jonah Smith and freshman Cam Frederick will play in the Collegiate Baseball Summer Invitational, a four-team tournament with an NCAA regional format. Mantle plays for CBSI Unity. Frederick and Smith are on the CSBI Liberty squad. Unity and Liberty square off at 6:00 p.m. tonight on ESPN2.

Head coach of the UNK volleyball team, Rick Squiers, has announced the addition of two transfers. A 5-9 defensive specialist/libero Breanna Jones will have two years of eligiblity UNK after transferring from Bridgeport, Connecticut. She averaged a team best 4.07 digs per set last year. A 6-2 middle blocker, Fallon Stuheit, will have four years of eligibility remaining after redshirting at Nebraska in 2019. She led her high school team to three Class D1 titles. The Lopers are coming off a National Runner Up finish and are set to begin fall camp in mid-August.

Tri City Storm defenseman Kyle Aucoin has been named the 2019-2020 USHL Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Aucoin has also been named to the USHL All-Academic team. He is the first student-athlete in the history of the Storm to win the award. Aucoin is an eligible prospect for the 2020 NHL Draft and previously announced a commitment to play college hockey at Harvard University.

Millard North’s Hunter Sallis continues to rise in the national recruiting rankings. According to an update to the Rivals rankings, Sallis is now the No. 11 overall player in the country for the 2021 class and the No. 2 point guard. That’s up from number 20 overall in the January rankings. Sallis is Nebraska’s first five star prospect. He holds a number of division one offers including Nebraska and Creighton.

US 30 Speedway, located outside of Columbus, will begin racing tonight (Thr). It will mark the first organized sporting event in Nebraska since the boys state basketball tournament. Kearney Raceway Park opens its season this Saturday and Sunday. Eagle Raceway near Lincoln opens their season on Saturday. Also Kam Raceway in Hastings will open up on June 12th. All tracks will be operating with limited attendance and under guidelines set by the state and by local Heath districts.
