By News Jun 2, 2020 | 6:05 AM

The Kearney Legion baseball program began holding tryouts Monday. As in previous years, the Legion program will be fielding four teams (The Runza Seniors, the Post 52 Juniors, the Jerseys Seniors and Five Points Bank Juniors). The Runza Seniors schedule includes 36-games with home-and-home doubleheaders against the Cornhusker League West Division foes — Grand Island Home Federal, North Platte, Hastings, Norfolk and Columbus. The Runza Seniors open the season Thursday, June 18th with a double-header against Grand Island Home Federal. Due to current restrictions attendance at games at Kearney’s Memorial Field will be limited to immediate family members.

Kearney Legion Board President Marty Albrecht will join us for an update at 9:07 this morning on KGFW’s “Talk of the Town”.

Former Kearney Runza standout and current Creighton outfielder Jered Wegner will play in the Northwoods League this summer in North Dakota. Wegner will be playing for the Bismarck Flickertails starting next week. Wegner was 2nd Team Big East for the Jays last season.

University of Nebraska student-athletes returned to athletic facilities for voluntary summer workouts on Monday. Members of the football, volleyball, soccer, women’s basketball and men’s basketball teams were the first to return for voluntary workouts. Additional Husker teams will prepare to begin workouts in a phased approach in the coming weeks. Husker student-athletes will follow a detailed plan and protocols to allow them to return to train in a safe and healthy manner.

Husker head coach Scott Frost says around 98 percent of his roster is on site. That goup did not include senior wide receiver JD Spielman. Frost says Spielman’s status with the program remains “unchanged.” HuskerOnline reports Spielman has reportedly been in Lincoln since leaving the team but has had no contact with the coaching staff. The Minnesota native has been on a personal leave since early March.

Wide receiver Omar Manning will be in Lincoln soon. Kilgore Junior College offensive coordinator Peter Hopkins told the Lincoln Journal Star on Monday that Manning wrapped up his associate’s degree in recent days and is expected to be on campus at Nebraska by this weekend. The last hurdle will be to get the official transcript sent to NU and approved. Once that happens, Manning will be able to report for the Huskers.

Following protests in Lincoln and Omaha and around the country Coach Scott Frost took to social media last night to issue a prayer for peace and safety. Frost says he is hurting for the black community and for the state of Nebraska after George Floyd’s killing at the hands of Minnesota police last week.
