KGFW Sports – Schwellenbach Honored and Legion Baseball

Jun 17, 2021 | 5:49 AM

Nebraska’s Spencer Schwellenbach was named the winner of the 2021 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award yesterday. The 2021 Big Ten Player of the Year and a semifinalist for college baseball’s Golden Spikes Award, Schwellenbach started every game at shortstop and served as the Husker’s closer this past season. Offensively, Schwellenbach ranked in the top 10 in the Big Ten in runs, RBIs and walks and committed just four errors in 186 chances. On the mound, Schwellenbach led the Big Ten with 10 saves, and finished the season with a microscopic 0.57 ERA in 31.2 innings pitched. He is the first Husker to earn the award. Jake Meyers was a finalist in 2017 but lost to three-time winner Brendan McKay from Louisville. In addition to yesterday’s Olerud Award, Schwellenbach was also named a third-team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, and he was named to the Central-ABCA/Rawlings All-Region team.
